Penn State trustees approve structural changes

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State trustees have unanimously approved structural changes that board leaders say will help improve openness and governance.

The 32-member Board of Trustees will now have five committees instead of three. A couple of existing committees were combined, while new groups will focus on outreach and development; governance; and risk, legal and compliance.

The changes approved Friday come in the wake of criticism over the board's actions in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges filed against retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky in November, including the ouster of the late Joe Paterno as head coach.

One trustee, Joel Myers, says the board changes are positives results that emerged from a major negative and goes along with the board's renewed emphasis on increased transparency.
